Rick Deitchman, Ph. D - Licensed Psychologist

Rick Deitchman received his B.A. from Columbia University in 1971 and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Kentucky in 1980.  He has been working as a psychologist since 1976.

 

Coming to Charlotte in 1979 he was employed as an adult outpatient therapist by the Mecklenburg County Mental Health Center prior to becoming one of the founders of Charlotte Psychotherapy and Consultation Group in 1985.

 

Dr. Deitchman can assist with a number of problem areas, including depression, anxiety, work/life balance, and relationship issues.  Dr. Deitchman has a particular interest in working with individuals and families struggling with substance abuse and recovery.  He is a firm believer in the effectiveness of Twelve Step programs.

 

Another area of interest and expertise is couples counseling, from pre-marital counseling to long term relationships, from enhancing a relationship to dealing with the impact of affairs.  Dr. Deitchman treats both heterosexual and same sex couples.

 

Believing that the best therapeutic approach is unique to each individual, couple, or family, Dr. Deitchman works to achieve a judicious integration of several approaches.  He is trained in and familiar with cognitive-behavioral therapy, Gestalt therapy, Jungian, and existential approaches,  as well as Eastern contributions to the art of therapy.  In working with clients, Dr. Deitchman believes in an active, engaged, approach.

 

In helping people to achieve a more satisfactory life, Dr. Deitchman is a believer in supplementing therapy with adjunctive methods, including but not limited to meditation, exercise, yoga, and movement therapy.  He understands the importance of spirituality within the life of each individual and takes a non-denominational approach to this matter, honoring the particular spiritual or religious orientation of his clients.

 

Dr. Deitchman is married with one child.  He enjoys reading, movies, and is an avid baseball and softball fan. One of his favorite activities over the past decade has been coaching softball at a variety of levels.
